Animated deformation between a sphere and its circumscribing cylinder, preserving horizontal slice areas
Archimedes showed that horizontal slabs of a sphere have the same area as the corresponding slabs of its circumscribing cylinder. This program animates the deformation between a sphere and a cylinder by smoothly interpolating the horizontal cross-sections, which transition between circles and annuli while preserving area. The visualization makes Archimedes’ area-preserving correspondence dynamic and concrete.
