Spherical harmonic decomposition of a dinosaur mesh, reconstructed from a truncated expansion
Spherical harmonics provide an orthonormal basis for functions on the sphere, analogous to the Fourier basis on the circle. This program applies a spherical harmonic decomposition to the surface of a dinosaur mesh, projecting the radial displacement function onto the spherical harmonic basis and reconstructing the surface from a truncated expansion. The result is a smoothed dinosaur whose level of detail is controlled by the number of harmonics retained.
