Stereographic projection from the sphere to the plane, conformal and circle-preserving
Stereographic projection maps the sphere to the plane by projecting from the north pole through each point to the equatorial plane. It is conformal (angle-preserving) and maps circles on the sphere to circles or lines in the plane. This projection is fundamental in complex analysis, where it identifies the Riemann sphere with the extended complex plane, and in cartography for polar maps.
