Strip of the hyperbolic plane isometrically embedded in 3-space, ruffling from negative curvature
The hyperbolic plane contains infinite geodesic strips — regions bounded by two equidistant curves — which inherit constant negative curvature K=−1. This program builds a triangular mesh whose intrinsic geometry matches such a strip, then relaxes it in R3 using a spring-and-charge system. Springs enforce the target hyperbolic edge lengths while Coulomb-type repulsive charges prevent the surface from self-intersecting.
The resulting surface curves and ruffles as the mesh tries to accommodate the excess area that negative curvature produces. Properties of the spring-charge system can be modified via the GUI.
