Seeing the Unseen: Math and Art was a group exhibition at the Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga, running January 8 to March 9, 2024. It was the second half of a pair — Seeing the Unseen: Science and Art had run in the fall — which together made up the college’s 2023–24 program on the arts and STEM. Morgan Rea and Hannah Seidler-Wright, both professors of mathematics, curated it with the museum’s assistant curator Roman Stollenwerk.
The show gathered fifteen artists: some trained as mathematicians who make visual and dimensional work out of what they study, some studio artists who use mathematics as the structure underneath a practice. Bathsheba Grossman’s 3D-printed sculpture and Robert Lang’s origami were in the same rooms.
The piece is joint work with Rémi Coulon, Sabetta Matsumoto and Henry Segerman, and for the exhibition we went under our joint name, 3-dimensional.space. It ran as a large-screen video installation: a continuous real-time flight through the eight Thurston geometries, projected at wall scale, so that the view from inside a curved space filled a room rather than a monitor.
